Davao City: Giardino Gelato

Giardino Gelato is one of our stop in our cousins' Davao Food Trip. A perfect pitstop after more than an hour window shopping around SM Lanang Premier. Giardino Gelato experiments with different flavors to craft flavorful gelato that’s considered a healthier but yummier alternative to ice cream.
It was all our first time to try Giardino Gelato. We all tried four different flavors; Tiramisu, Salted Caramel, Mascarpone and Ciocolato. And based on taste, we all love the Salted Caramel, because of the balance in the sweetness and saltiness.

Giardino Gelato branch we visited is at the 2nd Floor of SM Lanang Premier.

Nanettes Cake Creations’ Sylvanas

Slyvanas is one those bake goodies that entails patience in baking. That it even became synonymous with Dumaguete City. A visit to the city means falling in line and wait for your turn to buy sylvannas.
In one of my visit to SM City General Santos City, I came across the newly opened stall of Nanettes Cake Creations. There I saw a chiller full of sylvanas that come in a variety of flavors; classic, ube, chocolate, mango, red velvet, mocha and cookies and cream.
I am not in the position to compare how at par with that of Dumaguete’s sylvanas was Nanettes’ but it did satisfy my cravings for sylvanas. Nanettes’ meringue is thicker and I highly recommend keeping it chilled to maintain its crunch. A box of six assorted flavor sylvanas is Php 160.00.

Nanettes Cake Creations is located at the Ground Floor of SM General Santos City infront of BDO.

Something Browie Needs to Learn from Papa

Happy Father's Day! Ours will always be different every year. While Mama is the easiest to surprise, Papa is the opposite. I know he is happy eating out on Father's Day, but he will always and forever say, "sa bahay na lang tayo."
Each year needs to be unique and must have a different strategy of getting him to eat out for lunch.
This year is quite unique, as me & Browie planned on asking Papa to teach him how to cook "dinuguan" or blood stew. Dinuguan is the very first dish aside of course from frying and roasting, that Sissy and I learned from Papa. Growing up, our Sunday's strarts in the kitchen either we're cooking "dinuguan" or adobo.
It's Browie's time and he is of age to learn his way around the kitchen. It was fun watching Browie learns how to cut the meat, prepare the pork's blood and cook the dinuguan with Papa's supervision.
Lunch at Tanoks was debated over, with me telling him that Mama was so hungry and Browie needs a haircut after. We were in Poblacion after the church service because we attended a funeral of our relative's granddaughter.
Tanok's is one of the homegrown chicken restaurant in Tupi. Raising chicken is one of the industry in our municipality, and so is the rise of chicken houses around. A visit to Tupi is not complete without tasting the chicken inasal. Tanok's is known for their dip, its one of my favorite dip, a perfect match for their chicken barbeque. Tanok's is located along the National Highway, Poblacion, Tupi, South Cotabato beside Tupi National Highschool.
Again, Happy Father's Day to our very own hero, Papa!

Davao City: Backyard Burgers

Burger is happiness! And I have been hearing from Sissy her Backyard Burgers' experience in Cebu. How she waited in line for hours just to have a taste of Davao's burger pride.
From our hotel, we walked under the scorching summer heat to have a bite of the infamous Backyard Burgers. Yes, been drooling over photos of those black sesame buns with its juicy, cheesy goodness for a while now. And now is the time.........

We came to pick our burger of choice. Sissy had the BB Garshroom Bacon Burger, Miya had BB Extra Cheesy Bacon Burger, Deo had the BB Cheeseburger Royale and I got the BB Extra Cheesy Burger. It was indeed a burst of happiness for us cousins, as we talk about anything under the sun that comes to mind as we wait for our orders. A good and memorable time to spent a day with each other.
We visited the Backyard Burgers located in Elpidio Quirino Avenue, Inside Pards Compound, Frontinf ICOHNS. Barkyard Burgers stays true to its tag line, " Made the Way You Want It," because it was indeed the way I want my burger to be.

Tangy Calamansi Crumb Bars

Summer is the time for baking experiments. And the star of my experiment is tangy Calamansi. Calamansi is a  hydrid of a citrus and a kumquat. I got this recipe from my go to food blog, The Tummy Train.

Tangy Calamansi Crumb Bars
Preheat oven at 350 F.
Crumb Crust
1 1/4 Cup All Purpose Flour
1 1/4 Cups Old fashioned rolled oats
1/2 tsp. &1/8 tsp. Salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
3/4 Cup Unsalted butter, melted
1 tsp. vanilla
  • Mix all the dry ingredients together. And add the melted butter and vanilla. Mix until crumbly. Get 3/4 of the crumbs, flatten it on the baking tray, bake for 15 minutes.

Cream Layer
1 can Condensed Milk
1 Tbsp. finely grated Lemon Zest
1/3 Cup fresh Calamansi juice
2 large Egg yolk
1/2 tsp. Lemon extract
  • Whisk together all the ingredients.
  • Pour it on the pre-baked crumbs. Then topped it the remaining crumbs.
  • Bake for 23-26 minutes.

It is better to chill it after baking before cutting it into bars. I prefer storing it on the fridge to get that tangy and gooey taste.
